Using a Scanner
This module explains how to use the Epson Perfection V750 scanner to scan a photograph from a newspaper. The instructions detail how to make a scan of the photograph to size, as well as how to make a second scan using a 66 line descreen setting in the Epson Scan 2 software. The instructions then describe the process of saving the scanned file as a Photoshop document in Adobe Photoshop.
Learning Outcomes
After reading this module, the user will be able to scan and descreen a photograph from a newspaper through the use of an Epson Perfection V750 scanner and the corresponding Epson Scan 2 software. They will also be able to save the scanned file as a Photoshop document using Adobe Photoshop.

Steps

Make sure the USB cable is connected to both the scanner and the computer. The USB port on the scanner is marked ‘b’ in Diagram 1.

Make sure the Epson Scan 2 software is downloaded and installed on your computer.

Turn on the scanner by pressing the power button, marked ‘c’ in the illustration below.

On the computer, open the Epson Scan 2 software.

Open the scanner cover, marked ‘a’ in Diagram 2.

Place the newspaper on the carriage (marked ‘d’ in Diagram 3) with the photograph facing down.

Close the scanner cover on top of the newspaper.

In the Epson Scan 2 software, make sure the mode is set to ‘Professional Mode’. This can be found in a dropdown list on the top right of the window.

In the Settings section of the window, name the file appropriately. In this case, the name ‘Newspaper1’ was used due to there being multiple scans necessary for the module.

In the Original section of the window, select ‘Reflective’ in the dropdown list for Document Type.

In the Original section of the window, select ‘Document Table’ in the dropdown list for Document Source.

In the Original section of the window, select ‘Photo’ in the dropdown list for Auto Exposure Type.

In the Destination section of the window, select ’48-bit Color’ in the dropdown list for Image Type.

In the Destination section of the window, select ‘300 dpi’ in the dropdown list for Resolution.

In the Destination section of the window, select ‘Original’ in the dropdown list for Target Size.

In the Adjustments section of the window, check the checkbox for ‘Unsharp Mask’.

In the Adjustments section of the window, check the checkbox for ‘Dust Removal’.

On the bottom left side of the window, press the large ‘Preview’ button.

The scan preview will open in a new window. In that window, crop out unnecessary content by clicking and dragging the mouse to create a box around the chosen photo.

Click back on the main window and press the large ‘Scan’ button located on the bottom right.

The ‘File Save Settings’ dialogue window should appear. In the ‘Image Format’ section of the window, select ‘TIFF (*.tif)’ in the dropdown list for Type.

Press the Ok button on the bottom left side of the window.

After the scan is complete, click back on the main window.

In the Settings section of the window, name the file appropriately. In this case, the name ‘Newspaper2’ was used due to there being multiple scans necessary for the module.

In the Adjustments section of the window, check the checkbox for ‘Descreening’.

Directly underneath the Descreening checkbox, select ‘Newspaper (85 lpi)’ from the dropdown list for Screen Ruling.

Press the large ‘Scan’ button located on the bottom right of the window.

The ‘File Save Settings’ dialogue window should appear. In the ‘Image Format’ section of the window, select ‘TIFF (*.tif)’ in the dropdown list for Type.

Press the Ok button on the bottom left side of the window.

Find the saved scan file (Newspaper2.tif) and right-click on it.

Select Open With - Adobe Photoshop.

Once Photoshop opens the file, click on File in the top left corner of the screen and select ‘Save As…’ from the dropdown.

Once the Save As dialogue window appears, select ‘Photoshop’ from the dropdown list for Format, located in the middle of the window.

Press ‘Save’ in the bottom right corner of the window.
